El Mirage 200 MPH Club
July 2007
Hot July weather combined with good course conditions supplied us with even hotter performances this meet.
John Noonan set two records this meet. The most significant being the 235.9 mph pass in 1650-APS-BF on the Noonan/Derwin Racing Hayabusa. This run destroyed the old record by 14.5 mph!! John also became the first person to run over 200 on the “wheel on a stick” sidecar rig of Noonan/Moreland with his pass of 216 mph in the 1350-SC-BF class. This run put 28+ mph on the old record again with Hayabusa power.
Scott Horner’s entry into the El Mirage 200 MPH Club should not be overshadowed by John’s accomplishments though. Scott entered the meet on the Horner/Thompson 1350-A-BG bike and ran a great 206 against the 202 record. Scott’s bike of choice? Hayabusa of course!
On the car side things were not so exciting. No new drivers made the club but, current members made significant runs. Willie Freudiger drove the Freudiger and Cline D/FMR to a new 223 mph record. This car uses a cast iron block and heads SBC. When was the last time we saw a 300” SBC without the trick stuff run a big load and live to run again?
Rick Yacoucci finally solved the problems with his 2 cylinder ‘busa and set a record of 203 against the old 168 standard. Another massive increase in class speed, 35 mph this time. I don’t think there are many 700cc bikes that run the speed this car does at El Mirage.
Although he is not a club member, I thought that Ron Cochran’s 197 record in G/PS class to be one of the highlights of the meet. No dry lakes meet for August, we are off to Bonneville trying to go fairly fast on a sunny day. Good luck to all who will be making the trip and let’s meet back at El Mirage in September.
