Mike Charlton 500 mph motorcycle next year?
« on: November 20, 2007, 02:41:58 PM »
Just saw this:

http://jalopnik.com/cars/novelties/hot-rodder-to-build-500-mph-motorcycle-324539.php

Anyone have pics of this motorcycle, I assume it's well underway if it's going to be on the salt next year.  Interesting the writer says the record to beat is only 350.  The two words "only" and 350" should never be used right next to each other.  They also made no distinction between wheel driven and jet owered.

Well, I'm just glad to see that it "comes equipped with a parachute". Now that my safety fears have been addressed, lets roll!

Oh, hell, I've got him beat.

I'm gonna build a 600 mph motorcycle! It's gonna have two parachutes!!

What is the fastest you have driven?

The semi, called American Thunder, raced at 180 mph, but it could go 250 mph. The bike, the QuasiMoto, can rev up to 203 mph on a straightaway. I can't drive it down the street. It would melt the asphalt, the heat would be so intense. It's built for speed, but it only drives straight. It won't take turns.

"Could go", "can rev up to"

Since the only place he's been is the drag strip, how much asphalt has he melted? The only timed run for the bike is 180. He claims over 200 at air show demonstrations.

I can't wait!!!
Well, it used to be Los Angeles . . . 50 miles north of Fresno now.
Just remember . . . It isn't life or death.
It's bigger than life or death! It's RACING.

What is it like to drive that fast?

It's like Nirvana for eight seconds. You have complete peace. All your problems are gone.

Yup, that sounds about right. His problems should start about 9 seconds into his first run...

Thrust motorcycle?  Is he renting time or going to run at BBBBBUB?

I would rather he bring his existing V8 bike to the salt. I would pay anything to watch Tom Evans face as he rolls this up to tech! He could make some runs as an unlimited!

Ah, yes. I'm still nursing a sore side from laughing at that thread.

Jet engine for 500 mph land speed attempt: $40,000

Frame, wheels, tires and the rest of the gear: $150,000

Support vehicle, pit set up, and all the rest $75,000

Picture of the landing after the first flight: Priceless

The reaction of the LSR community here and the those published with the article are none too kind.
I would hope that common sense would prevail for everybody related to this effort.

"Often a bad experience is good, especially if it is somebody else, but no experience is always worse." (me) :-(
"I would rather lose going fast enough to win than win going slow enough to lose."
"That horrible smell is dirty feet being held to the fire"

Man what a can o' worms this seems to have opened up.  I was a little surprised to see people piling on like this.  To my young, inexperienced mind LSR is all about innovation and trying new ideas or re-thinking an old idea in a new way.  Isn't that what this guy is doing?  I know of a few other fast guys that put out some very fast machinery from their garage.  Sure that article I posted can be mocked but why not show the guy some support from the community and don't assume the printed info is fact.  This is why I posted, to find out the real info on this bike.

I'll back off a bit. My initial scorn was ASSuming it wasn't even built yet and was yet another of those "next year I'll go XXX fast" blah blah articles without any actual work to back it up.

As to the V8 powered bike, I would still LOVE for that thing to show up on the salt. Toms Evans head would explode trying to make it class legal but the runs, if they happened, would be epic.

kent
ps.... the car/bike wont be legal!
