It’s about a week ‘til we host the 8th annual Salt Talks – the landspeed racer’s gathering that’s held each year at SpeedWeek. Salt Talks is a fundraiser for landracing.com, and it’s a social gathering for everyone that wants to attend. We expect about 300 people this year – don’t miss it!
Salt Talks is scheduled for Sunday evening, the 12th of August 2007. It’ll (probably) be held at the “Bend in the Road” – the place where the access road from I-80 to where we race turns 90 degrees to the right.
It’s the only corner in the road – that’s why it’s easy to call it the bend. . . Lots of folks camp at the Bend, too. This year we’ll have more of the same that we’ve had all the previous years – food (hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwurst, and pasties, as well as soft drinks), Salt Talks t-shirts, a 50/50 drawing with at least three dozen gifts, and – best of all – lots of bench racing. As I say each year, we will NOT have a lie detector on-site, so you can say anything you want to say about how fast you used to go, how fast you would have gone if you hadn’t broken the motor, or how fast you really went but Glen Barrett must have screwed up the clocks during your pass.
SPECIAL NOTE: I’m writing this on the first of August, and the conditions at the Salt aren’t as dry as we’d like them to be. The bend in the road is muddy – and boyoboy, when it’s muddy, you can’t move without gathering mud on your shoes or on your wheels. If it’s muddy at the Bend – we’ll do what we can to find a dry location for the gathering. Nancy and I will be arriving at the Salt this Sunday evening (5 August), so when not helping set up the course – we’ll scout for a dry place for Salt Talks. Keep your eyes and ears open during the first weekend of SpeedWeek for announcements of where we’ll have the picnic. Listen to Ron on AM 1610 radio to hear the latest information.
We don’t want to cancel Salt Talks without giving it a hell of a good try – if for no other reason than I’ve got about 160 t-shirts paid for out of pocket that I need to sell, as well as the fact that we’re bringing 240 quarter-pound hamburger patties, 160 quarter-pound hot dogs, 100 half-pound pasties (you do know what a pasty is, don’t you?), and darn near 5 dozen bratwurst. This is more than Nancy and I can eat, so let’s hope there’s dry space at the Bend in the Road, hey?
