I can tell all of you,  those were fun times.

Matt was right in the middle of all of it.

Vesco was SOOOOOOOOOOOO Cool.

He even had Norma's little dog, I think it's name was Cricket, inside the cockpit with him just before a record attempt.

Nothing ever seemed to bother him.

I found a great sequence of photos showing an interesting streamliner and Arnold, a guy who drove to the flats every year from (I think) Tonawanda New York, a 2000 mile plus journey and I never got to see him run.  Always fun to talk to, an interesting guy.  Since passed on as I read in an earlier post.  The series has a variety of people in them, including Don Vesco's dad and Rick Vesco offering help to a fellow salt guy!

Matt, great old shots of the Ballpoint Banana and Arnold.  He did make a partial run when we towed him but he had shifting problems.  I think he was there more for the camaraderie than the racing.  He was quite the interesting guy, car was tiny an old Evinrude on alcohol.  Thanks for the great pictures, keep them coming

There is a hot topic about driver position running and I found these pics of a VW Streamliner from some time ago with the driver prone.  I cannot remember what happened to this liner, it was well done.  My memory may be off, but I seem to remember that it might have rolled   I only remember it at the salt one time.

Also, the Bob George monster Harley, went very fast wit Dave Campos riding..

Matt, you are one of the guys making this a great thread.  Keep digging and scanning, there are all great shots.  In fact, I think even the ugly, snowy aged fotos need to be seen here.  They are our history, join in you guys and post what you have.  Kids, dig in dad and grandpas pictures and get them posted.

The sound of that bike were frightening. As I recall it was a one gear bike. The clutch must have taken a terrific beating off the line because it sounded like train wheels

rubbing on the rails in a tight corner. I think Dave went over 240 on it a L O N G time ago. It also ran w/o a fairing and the power train became the basis of the Bob George streamliner.

They had a framework and a chain hoist to pick the front end up to work on it.  H e l l for stout and brute force were the trade marks.

Matt, the liner was the SCAT Volksliner and powered by a front wheel drive air cooled VW engine. The driver, Phil Knight laid on his stomach in a prone postition and looked out of a 'periscope' to steer. Handling problems resulted in a flip and  rebuild but ultimately was not successful.

I am the unofficial historian for all things VW and land speed racing and have been looking for the car or it's remains for over two decades as the car is an important link in the VW land speed racing history. Should any readers of this thread know where I can locate Phil Knight (northern California) or the currrent history on the Volksliner, please contact me (PM).

Where is the Volksliner now? ? ?

Burly:  I presume you've checked the local VW dealers.  That's Bob Leppan in the Triumph jacket going to get some spare parts, I presume, but who knows, maybe he was going in to check on the Volksliner.   



Matt:  I continue to be amazed at how you and Alex Tremulis captured the same moments in history, only seconds apart from one another.  It seems you followed each other around that day.  You guys MUST be in each other's photos...
